The thesis

What it was sold as: a single cross-chain gaming token for a platform connecting Web3 games, using LayerZero for interoperability across Solana, Polygon, Avalanche and Klaytn. Pre-listing announcements named Magic Eden, Star Atlas and DeFi Kingdoms as partners. Several founding team members and advisors came from SuperDuper, the studio behind the Creepz NFT collection, and the project was represented by the agency WME.

The case at listing rested on distribution, not revenue. Binance's Launchpool drew more than $8.6B of staked BNB and FDUSD within its first day, which Binance confirmed to Decrypt was a record. A December 2023 presale reportedly drew close to $10M of demand in its first 15 minutes. Pre-market trading on Whales Market reached $2.85 two days before listing, an implied $476M market cap on the initial float.

What the numbers said at the time: 167.1M tokens (16.71%) circulated at listing against a 1B maximum supply. Team and advisors (23%), treasury (23%) and private-sale investors (22%) together held 68% of supply. Presale prices were reported between $0.087 and $0.15 per token, so presale buyers held roughly 16x to 28x paper gains at the $2.41 listing-day price.

Name collision to be aware of: a separate project also called Portal, a Bitcoin atomic-swap exchange led by Chandra Duggirala, announced a $34M seed round from Coinbase Ventures and others in January 2024, one month before PORTAL listed. That funding has no connection to the PORTAL gaming token.

Outcome: PORTAL's all-time high of $3.36 was set on listing day. On 3 October 2026 it traded at $0.01794, 99.3% below the listing-day reference and 99.5% below the peak, after an all-time low of $0.00735 on 29 May 2026. In December 2025 Portal merged with BLIFE Protocol, an Animoca Brands-backed Bitcoin ecosystem project. BLIFE's chief executive Benjamin Charbit, formerly a game director at Ubisoft, became Portal's CEO and Animoca committed new capital.

What breaks it

Valuation without cash flow: at $2.41 the market valued PORTAL at about $2.4B fully diluted with no disclosed platform revenue. The whole valuation depended on future demand for the token itself.

Supply overhang: 83% of supply was locked at listing. Tokenomics trackers record team and advisors receiving 3.5% at launch followed by 30 months of linear vesting, with presale tranches unlocking monthly. Circulating supply has grown from 167.1M to 891.0M tokens, a 5.3x increase in float.

Cost-basis asymmetry: Launchpool participants received tokens without paying for them, and presale buyers held 16x to 28x gains on day one. Both groups had a reason to sell into listing-day liquidity, and presale holders reportedly could unlock only 15% at launch, which spread that selling over the following months.

Attention, not usage: the pre-listing airdrop campaign rewarded users for posting about Portal on X. Engagement was measured in posts, not in games played or payments made in PORTAL.

Product dependency: a shared gaming currency only works if third-party games route payments through it. No usage figures for PORTAL as an in-game currency were published at listing. Within 22 months of listing the project changed ownership and leadership through the BLIFE merger.

Liquidity

At listing (29 February 2024): Binance spot pairs against BTC, USDT, BNB, FDUSD and TRY, with Binance's Seed Tag applied. 167.1M tokens circulating. The 50M Launchpool tokens (5% of supply) were fully liquid on day one.

Now (CoinGecko, 3 October 2026): price $0.01794, market cap $15.99M, fully diluted valuation $17.94M, circulating supply 891.0M (89% of maximum supply), 24-hour volume about $4.9M across 44 markets.

Order-book depth is thin. On Binance PORTAL/USDT there is about $23K of asks within 2% above the price and $31K of bids within 2% below. On Binance, a buy of $50K would move the price by more than 2%.

Derivatives set the price. Perpetual futures volume runs at 27.1x spot volume, and open interest of $9.6M equals 60% of the market cap. Moves are driven more by leveraged positioning than by spot buying.
